TV on the Internet, Episode 76: Libby Hill’s Arizona Through The Back Door (Warning: some distortion in first half of episode. Give us a break, it was recorded going 80 mph through Arizona.)
90 Plays | Download

Todd and Libby are joined by the magical, mystical David Sims and Zack Handlen to discuss the recent news that American Horror Story is going to do something new with every new season and their five favorite TV characters of 2011. Included are copious discussion about what makes Pam from Archer awesome, some thoughts on what it means to be a great character in a bad show, and Todd’s proposal for a series called “Squatchin’.” Plus, a little Auld Lang Syne from Marah.
*May include incidental spoilers for shows talked about but nothing that will ruin your experience let’s all be grown-ups now, shall we?*

Todd and Libby drop in on this fine Christmas evening to share with you a couple of tales of the season, including Todd reading from the short stories of Bret Harte and Libby reading from Laura Ingalls Wilder’s The Long Winter, plus music from Pittsburgh Symphony Brass. Thanks for listening in 2011, and we can’t wait to keep talking TV with you in 2012.

Todd and Libby went away, but they’re back now, and they’ve gotten VERY BAD AT PODCASTING. Expect frequent pauses to look at kittens, lots of awkward stuttering, and some actual TV discussion in between all of that, including segments in which Libby tells everyone who didn’t like the Homeland finale that they’re bad and wrong. Also: American Horror Story, Parks & Recreation, Community, Up All Night, changing distribution models for television, 2 Broke Girls, and why Breaking Bad season four was terrible.
Time code:
00:00.00-00:06.14 Behind the scenes as Todd plans something called VanDerWerffmas. And it is just as terrifying as it sounds. Also, apparently, Taylor Swift, plus sweet, sweet tuneage from John Ralston. Then we try and figure out how to do a podcast.
00:06.15-00:23.50 So we talk about Homeland’s first season and finale. **contains spoilers**
00:23.51-00:33.10 And then we talk about American Horror Story, But not before Todd launches into an unrelated spiel about himself and things he likes and doesn’t like. **contains spoilers** **for AHS, not for stuff Todd likes** **well, also for stuff Todd likes, I guess**
00:33.11-00:39.50 Then Todd makes me talk about alternate distribution models for television because he’s a dick. (Seriously though, the discussion is sparked by this article by Rick Ellis. Read it here.)
00:39.51-01:04.50 Random hits on Sons of Anarchy, Dexter, Up All Night, Cougar Town, Modern Family, Community, and Parks and Recreation. Plus, random word invention and 2 Broke Girls. Also look for potential spoilage on Todd’s top 10 of the year and a one-off insult of Breaking Bad.
And an inappropriate discussion to round out the episode.

Todd and Libby are back with the first part of a two-part podcast, and they’re surrounded by cats! They’re also answering 10 of your questions, handpicked by Libby, including thoughts that will almost certainly offend those of you who like Republicans, Dexter, and other terrible things. (Ha ha!) Also, a lot of theorizing about New Girl and some laughs.
Time code:
00:00.00-00:05.00 A new, underwhelming cold open and the return of less than ideal sound quality and it’s all the fault of stupid kittens, plus awesome music from Benjamin Shaw.
00:05.16-00:46.05 Answering Formspring questions: Libby’s Choice! Includes questions regarding A Gifted Man, scarring television, New Girl, Breaking Bad characters, terrible tv taste, the mancession, long-in-the-tooth comedies, Suburgatory, Ron and Tammy 2 vs. Ron and Tammys, and…
00:46.06-01:03.18 The Republican nomination process as reality television. (Ed. note: This is set off because Todd insists there may be Republican listeners. I remain dubious.)
01:03.19-01:08.47 All the places you can reach us when we inevitably disappear again. Wrapping up and more music from Benjamin Shaw. PLUS, an amazing Frank Fisticuffs bonus reel!

Todd and Libby have been away, but they return to tell you of their travels. This mostly just means they saw the Breaking Bad finale a while back and didn’t want to spoil it for you. But that means this episode is filled with talk of the show’s fourth season, with lots and lots of discussion of what happened and what WILL happen. Before that, though, we’ve got plenty of talk about the season’s new comedies, including Libby’s strange theories about one of her new favorites, Todd’s thoughts on why New Girl will eventually(?) get irritating, and some discussion of the wonders of Raising Hope. Who’s that Todd? IT’S TODD!
Time code:
00:00.00-00:5.15 Todd has a new, amazing impression that he’s taken the last month to perfect and the theme song to prove it. Many excuses about our absence and music from Shannon Curtis.
00:5.16-00:58.03 Let’s talk about new (and some returning) comedies. We break down our thoughts on Up All Night, Free Agents (R.I.P.), Whitney (plus, Jaime Weinman namedrop alert), New Girl (and Libby’s spin-off theory), 2 Broke Girls and the myriad issues contained therein, Suburgatory (and Libby’s horrifying, show-ruining theory), thoughts on Community and how it’s the WORST now, a brief look at Parks & Recreation. Also, *shudders* Glee. Plus, How I Met Your Mother, Modern Family, The Middle, Happy Endings and Raising Hope. Plus, ugly babies.
00:58.04-01:27.14 And the main event: Breaking Bad’s fourth season. Learn it, live it, love it.
01:27.17-01:31.02 All the places you can reach us when we inevitably disappear again. Wrapping up and more music from Shannon Curtis.
